Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc.
Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc. (“Sony CSL”) was established in February 1988. Sony CSL values the contribution that achievements make to society and humanity, new science and technology and product development. We encourage and support each member’s creativity and initiative. A work of research often reflects the researcher’s worldview, values, and philosophy. We bring together “Crazy” people to challenge themselves to make a difference in the world.
Sony CSL was founded with a focus on fundamental research in computer systems. This included operating systems, the Internet and user interfaces. As the organization grew, its focus shifted towards exploring how computers can be used in different domains, such as systems biology and econophysics, artificial intelligence, and even economics. And now, its major research themes are “Global Agenda,” which encompasses issues ranging from energy to food and healthcare; and “Human Augmentation,” which includes studies exploring human creativity and human-computer interaction/integration and “Cybernetic Intelligence.”In addition to Tokyo, we have a lab in Paris (founded in 1996).
Sony CSL Paris is a thriving research cell that uses tools from complexity science and data science. to explore questions in diverse areas, including understanding and creating music, language, communication systems, sustainability and innovation dynamics, creativity, and creativity.
